Are Carbs bad for dogs?

When it comes to your dog's nutrition, carbohydrates are often misunderstood. While lots of dog-related blogs and websites might say otherwise, carbohydrates play several vital roles in your dog's diet.

Today, I want to share some insights into why carbohydrates are beneficial and necessary for your pet’s health- and why we include carbs in our Blends.

What Are Carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are one of the three major macronutrients, alongside proteins and fats, found in animal diets. They include sugars, starches, and dietary fibres, each playing unique roles:

  • Sugars: These are the simplest form of carbohydrates, with glucose being the most fundamental. Glucose is a critical energy source for animal cells, providing necessary fuel once starches are broken down.
  • Starches: Contrary to some beliefs, dogs are fully equipped to digest starches, converting them into usable energy. This ability is a result of evolutionary changes where dogs have adapted to digest starch more efficiently than their wild ancestors. Additionally, starch is crucial in forming the structure and texture of kibble, supporting its shape and shelf stability.
  • Fibres: There are two types of dietary fibres—soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibres dissolve in water and help support digestion by promoting healthy intestinal microbes and reducing harmful bacteria. Insoluble fibres help regulate bowel movements and improve stool consistency. They're especially useful in weight management diets as they help provide satisfaction without adding calories.

Carbohydrates vs. Protein & Fat for Energy

It's essential to understand how dogs derive energy from their food. Carbohydrates provide a quick and efficient energy source, being the first to be broken down. When carbohydrates are unavailable, a dog's body then turns to proteins and fats. However, processing proteins for energy is more complex and less efficient than carbohydrates, as it involves breaking down proteins into amino acids and then into glucose.

The Role of Carbohydrates in a Balanced Diet

Feeding your dog a complete and balanced diet that includes an appropriate mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats is crucial.

Carbohydrates don't only support daily energy needs but also contribute to your dog's overall health in multiple ways:

  • They provide quick energy, allowing proteins to be used for their primary purpose: building and repairing body tissues.
  • They support gastrointestinal health through dietary fibres.
  • They play a role in the physical characteristics of dog food, which affects palatability and digestibility.

Carbohydrates are a necessary part of your dog’s diet, contributing to their energy, health, and well-being. If you have any questions about your dog’s nutritional needs or want to learn more about our products, please feel free to get in touch.
